PROSPERITY

Funded by the Afghan International Chambers of Commerce (AICC)

In order to create a strong, stable, prosperous, and sovereign Afghanistan, it is essential to build a strong foundation. Education, sanitation and health are the most basic elements for building a foundation.

On Oct 3, 2003, Aid Afghanistan for Education took the initiative to start the Prosperity Project. This project is designed to clean the city of Kabul with the help of the municipality. After many meetings and discussions with the Mayor of Kabul and the administrator of the District #10, the work began.

This pilot project started on Street # 5 in Quala-e-Fattullah, where  a 16 foot long pile of garbage was collected in front of an elementary school.  Most of the school kids have permanent scars on their beautiful faces from mosquito bites. These mosquitoes live and feed from the garbage.

On Oct 3, 2003 two cars and seven workers were sent from the District # 10 to began the work by removing the pile of garbage in front of the school.  By late afternoon it was all taken outside of the city to a dumpsite.  The school kids were happy to be able to play outside again.

There are 48 residential houses located on this street. As the workers were shoveling the garbage onto the trucks, members of Aid Afghanistan for Education were knocking on the doors to discuss the program with the residents.  Wooden compost boxes and two nylon bags were distributed to the houses.  We found a corner in every resident's house for the compost box and explained the procedure as well as encouraging them to segregate paper product from glass, plastic and metal.

Within two months from the start of the project, eleven streets were cleaned, compost boxes and nylon bags were distributed to 400 houses.

Meetings have been held with the Ministry of Agriculture for the collection of the compost material to be taken to the agricultural fields every four months.

Professors from Faculty of Agriculture at Kabul University has agreed to assist the program by teaching seminars on compost and the importance of sanitation.
